Lake Bunyonyi- The most beautiful deepest lake in the Africa.

Lake Bunyonyi is also known as the second deepest lake in Africa and is located in southwestern Uganda between districts of Kabale and kisoro.

Lake Bunyonyi is estimated to vary between 144ft and 900meters  in depth 

It’s also one of the lakes in Uganda that are bilharzia free and safe for swimming.

Lake Bunyonyi has 29 islands, pleasant climate, the mountains and the Virunga volcanoes which all give magical and stunningly beautiful scenery.

People will tell you that its the deepest or largest but the fact is what you will see is one of the most beautiful stunning lakes in  Africa.

Its well clear that visitors are awed by the mystical enchanting beauty of Lake Bunyonyi that why Lonely Planet called it “A scene from Lord of the Rings”

Bunyonyi means a place of little birds but it’s not a place for birds but its also a place for relaxing, reflection and quietness.anumber of activities are also supported for example nature walks, hiking and biking.

Relaxing and chilling out

Lake Bunyonyi is the best place in Uganda to relax and chill out after a tiresome safari or trekking in the Bwindi impenetrable forests, mountain climbing on the Rwenzori and many other activities.

one of the best dishes served is the cray food which is cooked in a number of different ways ranging from pasta to Pizza.

Canoeing / Boating

Lake Bunyonyi has 29 islands which all need to be explored by you, The island is occupied by people and some forests hence this all supports nature walks.

All you have to do is chose a day and get a tour guide and explore the magnificent beauty of the Lake Bunyonyi islands.You can either decide to take the motorized cruise on the lake or Dugout Canoeing which is the most popular. 


The word bunyonyi means the place of little birds.Lake bunyoyi is a place of over 200 bird species that are found on the islands.

You can decide to go birding on the 29 islands on Lake Bunyonyi with a motorized boat or a dugout canoe.

So if you are thinking about birding, Lake Bunyonyi is the best destination for you.


Lake Bunyonyi is the only lake in Uganda that is considered as bilharzia free making it the best swimming place in Uganda.But the fact that its very deep, You must be a very good swimmer.

It would be an amazing feeling to swim in one of the most beautiful deepest lakes in Africa.

DO NOT  forget to take security precautions, remember this is a very deep lake.

Mountain Biking

Biking around the lake and enjoying the beautiful scenery is a very amazing experience .don not forget to have a hamlet with you.

The temperatures are cool so riding the bike will be delightful that not even the sun will stop you.

Make sure you have a guide around you and take security precaution.

Hiking and walks.

You can decide to take a nature walk around lake Bunyonyi.Make sure you have guides to accompany you to make sure you safe.

Hiking will mostly be done through the mountainous regions and also through the surrounding villages where you will meet Ugandans.

Village Visits 

Visiting the surrounding villages around Lake Bunyonyi will give you a wonderful stay on the island.

You will meet the Batwa people who are very friendly and they are the original people of the forest .you can also decide to visit the local markets, school to even have a more amazing experience.

The  Batwa people will also teach you how to cook traditional dishes.

Getting a visit to the punishment island( Akampene)

This was the island where girls who got pregnant before marriage were taken to die because they would be a shame to their families.

In the old Bakiga traditions, girls who got pregnant before marriage were taken to the Akempene and they would die because of hunger or when trying to swim back to the island.

You will have quite a cool moment seeing the punishment islands.
